When Thoughts Echo Back: Is AI Listening to Our Minds?
Sometimes I think life is strange these days. Whatever we think about,
read, or even casually wonder about somehow seems to appear right in front of
us out of nowhere.
Every morning, I make it a habit to read two books slowly, page by page,
taking time to absorb the storyline and reflect on the meaning behind the
words. One of the books I am currently rereading is The Choice by Dr.
Edith Eva Eger. The book speaks about Auschwitz in 1944 and the suffering of
Hungarian Jews during the war.
Interestingly, the first time I read the book, I did not pay much
attention to the words “Auschwitz” or “Hungarian Jews.” I simply followed the
story. But the second time around, I found myself pausing and thinking more
deeply about it. What was Auschwitz really like? How horrifying must it have
been? I could not fully picture the reality.
Then something unexpected happened.
While checking my emails, a column from Quora suddenly appeared discussing
Auschwitz and Hungarian Jews, complete with photographs and explanations.
Naturally, my curiosity grew and I continued reading. For the first time, I
began to understand the scale and tragedy of what happened there.
But at the same time, I found myself wondering: how did this suddenly
appear right after I had been thinking about it?
Was it merely coincidence? Or are today’s algorithms and AI systems
becoming so advanced that they can predict our interests based on what we read,
search, click, or spend time looking at online?
Life feels strange sometimes. Perhaps AI is not reading our minds — but
it is certainly becoming very good at reading our patterns.
